Run it weekly, even in the rain. Most people turn off their AC during the cooler months. This is a mistake. Running the AC for 10 minutes once a week keeps the internal seals lubricated. If those seals dry out, the refrigerant (gas) leaks, and that's when the expensive repairs start.

Don't wait for it to stop blowing cold. A standard service should include:

• Lubrication: The gas carries oil that lubricates the compressor. No gas = no oil = seized engine part.
